Despicable Me 3 (2017) – Family, Fun, and Fluffy
Despicable Me 3 is the third installment in the wildly successful animated franchise from Illumination, and it doesn’t disappoint. This time around, Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) faces off against a new villain—Balthazar Bratt, a former '80s child star who never moved on from his disco days. With shoulder pads, synth music, and bubble gum-based weapons, Bratt is as ridiculous as he is entertaining.
Adding a new twist, Gru discovers he has a long-lost twin brother named Dru—also voiced by Carell—who is his complete opposite. Dru is cheerful, rich, and still dreams of being a supervillain, unlike the now-reformed Gru. This sibling rivalry leads to plenty of comedic moments, especially as the two try to pull off a heist together.
Of course, no Despicable Me movie is complete without the lovable Minions. Their sub-plot involving a jail breakout and a hilarious talent show keeps the slapstick humor flowing. Though slightly disconnected from the main plot, the Minions' antics bring a chaotic charm that kids especially enjoy.
What stands out in this sequel is its message about family and acceptance. While the jokes are rapid-fire and the animation vibrant, there's heart in the way Gru learns to embrace his brother and redefine what it means to be part of a family.
Although Despicable Me 3 doesn’t quite reach the emotional depth of the first film, it’s packed with fun, color, and enough laughter to satisfy both kids and adults. It may not reinvent the animated genre, but it delivers what the franchise promises—light-hearted entertainment with lovable characters and a big dose of Minion madness.
